A queer experimental film about unwanted childlessness in a world where normative heterosexual relationships dictate who can become parents and in what way. Junk River – Standing Tall
FILM FACTS
Director: Anakin Tora Botwid
Country: Sweden
Year: 2018
Running time: 6 minutes
Genre: Music video

World premiere of Junk River’s new music video!

This song is about how we fight to maintain a feeling of identity and self respect while the system, society’s norms and people around us try to control our bodies, our minds and the space we are allowed to take.
In the video interpretation of the song we wanted to let the feeling of struggle shine through, as well as the personal and intimate life – because the personal is always political, especially for people breaking the norms. The video shows small glimpses of that personal life and through that a collective struggle for freedom. Stand tall, be proud of yourself and take care of your community.

“…BORN IN FLAMES serves as both a document of feminist, anti-racist social movements and as inspiration for modeling future political work.” Craig Willse, Dean Spade Women and Performance, 2013.

This lesbian-feminist film classic imagines a New York ten years after a revolution in which a socialist government gains power. But women are still not equal, and black women even less so. Several feminist groups decide to organize and mobilize. They deploy different strategies to counter male power, but it seems violent revolution is the only answer. A Women’s Army is set up to defend women from attack, while the male-dominated media remains sceptical.
To expose and challenge dominant power, Borden structures the film through a series of constructed newscasts, documentaries and police surveillance footage through which the direct action is filtered.
Despite being made 25 years ago, this film is startlingly relevant – and the final scene shockingly prescient.

Preserved by Anthology Film Archives with restoration funding from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and The Film Foundation.

In New York City, LGBTQ youth-of-colour gather out on the Christopher Street Pier, practicing a performance-based artform, Ballroom. Twenty-five years after Ballroom first became famous outside their scene by Madonna’s music video “Vogue” and the documentary “Paris Is Burning”, a new and very different generation of LGBTQ youth have formed a new artistic activist subculture, named the Kiki Scene.
The film KIKI follows seven characters from the Kiki community over the course of four years, using their preparations and spectacular performances at events known as Kiki balls as a framing device while delving into their battles with homelessness, illness and prejudice as well as their gains towards political influence and the conquering of affirming gender-expressions.
The scene has evolved into an important (and ever-growing) organization for Black-and Trans-Lives Matter movements. Run by LGBTQ youth for LGBTQ youth, it draws strategies from the Civil Rights, Gay Rights and Black Power movements.
The film KIKI is a collaboration between Kiki gatekeeper, Twiggy Pucci Garçon, and Swedish filmmaker Sara Jordenö, and their insider-outsider approach to their stories breathes fresh life into the representation of a marginalized community who demand visibility and real political power.
